Most gamers in the west may have forgotten if not think of side-scrolling shooters as a gem from the past. Some see these games of the past as "too hard" or not as enjoyable, being so skill based compared to modern games. Not in Japan. Whether its a top-down or side-scrolling developers over in the land of the rising sun have still been cranking out new flying pew pew shooters, and there's a skilled fan base for it. The concentration and skill required to complete one stage with out dying is beyond my abilities.This video of Crave's latest game is just bonkers. I'm pretty sure there's a huge seizure warning as this game boots up.
The game is called Akai Katana Shin (Red Katana "True?")and will be released on Japan's XBLA this May. No word on a western release yet. More info here on Crave's website.
Watching this intimidates me in ever thinking I could beat it and reminded me of a Japanese Top scrolling shooter that came out a couple years ago that was fun. Had an interesting concept of black and white enemy bullets and switching your aircraft from black and white. Matching the color of your ship with enemy bullets give you immunity from damage however your own bullets do nothing as well. Check it out:
